‘Plastic Free Community’ status awarded to Berwick by Surfers Against Sewage

Berwick upon Tweed has gained plastic free status, joining a network of communities across the UK who are leading the way to tackle throw-away plastic.

The town has been awarded Plastic Free Community status by marine conservation charity Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) in recognition of the work it has done to reduce the impact of single-use plastic.

The campaign was led by the local environmental organisation Sea the Change in partnership with Greener Berwick. Jointly, both organisations have undertaken a range of initiatives to combat plastic pollution, including engaging local businesses, organisations, and residents in adopting sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics. Through awareness campaigns, educational programs, and collaborative efforts, the community has successfully reduced its reliance on plastic and promoted eco-friendly practices.

The campaign started later in 2019 with local businesses, schools and community groups engaging and exploring creative ways to minimise the amount of disposable plastics they use. Juliana Amaral, Sea the Change Co-founder and Chairperson commented on the impact COVID had on the campaign: “The campaign started really well in Berwick-upon-Tweed with many local businesses and groups working to reduce single use plastics. However, it was put on hold for more than 2 years due to lockdown. To minimise the risk of contamination many local businesses had to temporarily revert to the use of single use plastic items.”

Local organisations have since played a vital role in this achievement, implementing measures such as offering plastic-free packaging, promoting reusable products, and reducing plastic waste in their operations. The commitment and dedication of these businesses have made a significant impact on the overall plastic footprint of the town.

Berwick’s PlasticFree Town status coincides with the launch by Sea the Change of the Borders Green Map last month. This is a directory of local organisations and businesses operating on both sides of the Borders and will provide information about local businesses and initiatives that are working hard to meet environmental targets and providing sustainable options to consumers. All local businesses and supporters of the Plastic Free Berwick upon Tweed campaign will be listed in the directory”.

These accomplishments are a testament to the collective efforts of the entire community, demonstrating the power of individuals coming together for a common cause. Plastic Free Berwick upon Tweed encourages residents, visitors, and neighbouring communities to continue supporting sustainable practices and making conscious choices that help protect our environment.
