People's Commission suggests answers on water pollution issues

The People's Commission on the Water Sector was set up by four academics with expertise in economics, water governance, innovation, and law to 'fill the gaps' in the Government's Cunliffe commission on the water sector regulatory system, and to reflect public concerns.

Greener Berwick submitted evidence to the People's Commission, largely from our Freedom of Information requests to Northumbrian Water and the Environment Agency over a 3 year period from 2022, regarding the 10 combined storm water overflows located in the Tweed Estuary.

The four key recommendations of the People's Commission are:

  1. A strategic advisory group of experts for water should be established by the Government, to determine a long-term strategy for water conservation, protection and water efficiency, to radically reduce pollution.

  2. The Government should legislate for an orderly process to transfer water companies into public ownership.

  3. Governance reform for worker and service-user elected/chosen directors.

  4. Those responsible for pollution need to be held accountable.
